What kinds of successes have happened in dance education at your school? We have four sections of dance a year!! We do two full shows a year, with both student choreography and teacher/guest artist choreography. We have students asking to take the courses next year. 8 students went on to challenge themselves by doing the IB Dacne exam.
What were the challenges?
We would like to work more deeply with the other performing arts teachers, and develop a schedule for 9/10th graders who right now cannot take any of the performing arts classes. We would also like a true budget!

Year One Team Report
What kinds of successes have happened in dance education at your school?
Overall, this year has been both a success and surprise, with a total of 134 kids taking class, and healthy numbers projected for next year.
Two student shows presented- one at end of each semester.
Field trips helped immeasurably to spark student interest and confidence.
The increased interest by students in trying something new, like joining the dance class, has been extremely beneficial to the overall elective opportunities at HPSH.
ELL students have more integration into the program, with feeling of being invited into the program.
Deliberate attention has resulted in the establishment of clear norms and traditions surrounding the beginning of class and the practices during the dance class:
dressed for class, arriving on time, taking care of business first, warm up, then - different protocols for guest artist days, as opposed to choreography and presentation days.
Clarification of expectations and rigor, as in other academic classes.
Team members have cooperated, with Andrea Dickinson teaching clogging to the dance classes, and Claudia Perezinzunza planning dance activities with Kenna Sarge and her ELL students.
Michele Costello and Charlotte Landreau have collaborated in the planning and teaching of their classes, against all odds.
What were the challenges?
Finding a way for Claudia and her students to participate in the dance program has been tough. Finding a way for Claudia's kids to participate with authenticity is key to her participation.
Convincing kids who are not academically confident to write and reflect at an in depth level.
Convincing other staff, including the administration, that dance is a broad concept with many applications, not just an isolated extra.
Although ACE provides some support, there is no money from the school for the dance classes. We have applied for 2 other small grants, and ask students to contribute $ if they are able.
